Fw: Upcoming changes to TEDCred

Dear TED.com Commenter,

It's been two years since we first launched "TEDCred," a way for commenters on TED.com to vote on the contributions of other commenters. During that time, we've received generous feedback from a number of TED community members on how to make this system more fair and more fun for everyone. We've carefully considered this feedback and, today, over the next several hours, we'll be rolling out a number of changes to the TEDCred system.

Below, we've outlined the changes you can expect to see:

+ Leveling out TEDCred scores
We've reset all TED.com accounts to zero TEDCred points. However, to recognize long-term contributors, we'll make up for this by automatically re-assigning TEDCred medals based on the previous scores. (The value of these medals will most likely be lower than the previous point scores; scores were rounded down.) With our new approach, 500+ is the maximum recognized score a user can achieve.

+ Establishing a broader idea of TEDCred
We've expanded the idea of TEDCred beyond comments to encapsulate the contribution a member has made to the TED community. TED.com users can now earn TEDCred by creating translations of TEDTalks, participating in the Associates webcast, organizing TEDx events and more.

+ Removing the "thumbs-down" vote
We've removed the "thumbs-down" option entirely, so comments and conversations can only be up-voted.

+ Adding a "Flag" option for abusive comments
If you see a comment which violates our Terms of Use, you can use the "Flag" button, located on every comment, to report it to our moderation team.

+ Changing the value of a vote
Thumbs-up votes will have a smaller impact on a user's overall score.

+ Adding badges for special contributions to the TED community
In addition to the TEDCred medals, we've developed a separate collection of unique badges that highlight the special contributions of certain TED community members: TED volunteer translators, TEDx organizers, TED speakers and more. If you have previously earned one or more of these badges, they will display automatically on each of your posts.

A big THANK YOU to those who helped us shape the next evolution of TED.com's commenting system. We look forward to reading your comments!

Sincerely,
Aja B.

So here's a little story that happened today, nerdy, but I'll tell it anyway..

...about a year ago I decided I wanted to watch some more Beat Takeshi films so I set Tivo to record them, but I didn't want it to record everything by Takeshi, so I set a wishlist recording to record all films that contain the title of the films I wanted to watch. One of his films is called "Brother" so for ages it has recorded every film with 'Brother' in the title that's come on telly (about one every 2 weeks or so as it happens). It's recorded Oh Brother Where Art Thou about 3 times...Then eventually just last week I realised that Tivo can easily do 'only containing the words' type wishlist monitoring as well. Duh!! So I changed it and, guess what, this evening I check the menu and there it is Beat Takeshi's Brother. I only had a week to wait. It was probably the very *next* film with 'brother' in the title.

Aahhhh, I don't know...life, eh?

Confused about prices

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your e-mail. I fully understand your question. Megaman are a brand who specialise in low energy products and manufacture their products to an extremely high quality. They are also constantly pushing the technology and bringing out new items (They were the manufacturer who first started bringing out the dimmable low energy bulbs). Because of this some people actually request Megaman products. They are very 'high end' products.

Lyvia is a budget brand (there are many companies like this). We sell far more Lyvia lamps than we do Megaman and personally I usually purchase the Lyvia bulbs because I'm not sure the price difference warrants the difference in products.

Dave Riley

Daniel Kitson: Facebook Imposter Thing

Hello There,

This feels like a rather grubby email to be sending, but apparently there is someone on Facebook, claiming to be me and saying that he wants to get to know "da fans".
Obviously, this is a bit perculiar and to be fair, seems like a strangely pointless deception rather than anything malicious. But then again, who knows, maybe this joker is sucking up all my sweet corporate gigs and advertising work. Moonwalking around the place endorsing products, irresponsibly impregnating women and admiring Jeremy Clarkson. All in my name.
IT WILL NOT STAND.

For the record, I am not on Facebook. And as i hope you know, I would never refer to you people as "da fans". I think of you as "the marketplace" and i have no desire to get to know you. Urgh. imagine. what a horrifying thought.
If you know anyone on facebook please let them know and, if they want to have any sort of contact with me, encourage them to join this mailing list as this and the incumbent reply email address is all i have.
That's all really.
I'll be in touch very soon with details for the UK tour of 66a Church Road - A Lament Made of Memories and Kept in Suitcases.

Hope this finds you in excellent fettle.

Cheers

Daniel

Is digital native / immigrant useful?

My memory of Born Digital & Mark Prenski, etc is that a) the difference is about a lack of knowledge as much as the presence of it (i.e knowledge of a time before ubiquitous information & media), and b) the focus of analysis is university intake so a preselected group - so it's a generational distinction *within* a group of technology-using people and is primarily about general behavour and expectation rather than specific 'technical ability' however that might be defined.
So anyway, I think it still has some analytical value - it's still important for the immigrants (and these, after all, are the people the argument is aimed at) to understand the gaps they need to bridge for their effort to have a positive effect on society.
